The topics folder contains the open topics, the year folder the actual topics given out.
There is one year folder per year, and one subfolder for every student doing a guided research with us. This folder contains subfolders admin and project. The latter is accessible to the student. It contains a subfolder for the proposal and a file for the abstract.

\title{Context Dimensions of Spreadsheet Knowledge}
\begin{document}
\maketitle

\end{figure}
\vspace*{-0,4cm} The Wizard-of-Oz experiment
in~\cite{KohKoh:SemTransformationOfSpshts} studies the background
knowledge of a given spreadsheet. In particular, the authors analyzed
distinct context dimensions; see Fig.~\ref{fig:helpNeeded} on next
page and also~\cite{KohKoh:stuas09,Kohlhase:UAForDocs}. This can be
considered a pre-study for a set of expert interviews with wide-impact
spreadsheet authors to confirm, negate, or extend these analyzed
context dimensions.
The Guided Research task consists in the elaboration of context dimensions of
spreadsheet knowledge. It includes to find out what spreadsheet authors' context dimensions are. In particular, some of the guided researcher's subtasks are:
\vspace{-0,2cm}
\begin{itemize}
\item finding wide-impact spreadsheets with authors\vspace{-0,4cm}
\begin{itemize}
\item who agree to publish these spreadsheets in your thesis\vspace{-0,2cm}
\item who are willing to spend time for an expert interview
\end{itemize}
\vspace{-0,44cm}
\item conducting a qualitative analysis of the expert interviews yielding context dimensions of spreadsheet knowledge\vspace{-0,44cm}
\item evaluating existing help systems for spreadsheets wrt. the determined context dimensions
\end{itemize}
Moreover, it includes to explore what context dimensions spreadsheet readers want/need/get? In particular, more subtasks\footnote{
Leading questions may be: ``Are the found context dimensions spreadsheet-independent?'', ``How author-specific are the found context dimensions?'', \ldots.} consist of
\vspace{-0,2cm}
\begin{itemize}\item finding spreadsheet readers, who are willing to spend time for this study\vspace{-0,44cm}
\item finding out how big the need for understanding the context dimensions really is
\end{itemize}

\title{Usability of an User Assistance System \\for Spreadsheets}
\begin{document}
\maketitle
\begin{abstract}
From 2008-2011 a user assistance system for spreadsheet documents was
developed in the SACHS Project. Unfortunately, the project funds ran
out before a usability test could be done. The Guided Research thesis
will cover this usability test. The results are important for the
follow-up project ``SiSsI'' (funded by the German Research Foundation;
2011-2013), in which the \sx prototype is built into a real world
system.
\end{abstract}
\begin{figure}[h]\vspace*{-1em}
\includegraphics[width=14cm]{images/UAforDocs_Poster_Horiz4}
\caption{\sx in a Nutshell}
\label{fig:sachs}
\end{figure}
\sx is a help system for any \excel'03 document,
whose background knowledge is explicity given in an ontology
\symOntology (in OMDoc format) and for which there exists an
interpretation mapping (a mapping between concepts in \symOntology and
cells in the given spreadsheet); see~\cite{KohKoh:ccbssmt09,KohKoh:mteuas09}.
The task is to conduct a case study about the usability of \sx, i.e.,
usage and usefulness of the user assistance (UA) features of \sx, wrt. to a
given, wide-impact spreadsheet \symService. It includes
\begin{itemize}
\item an analysis of the existing UA given to readers of \symService,
\item authoring the \symService-specific background ontology \symOntology
(based on interviews with \symService-experts),
\item deciding on a case study methodology (e.g. interview, online
survey, use logs, ...),
\item finding subjects
\begin{enumerate}
\item who use \symService on a regular basis
\item who are willing to spend time for the case study
\end{enumerate}
\item conducting the case study
\item analyzing the usability of \sx for \symService based on the case
study, yielding a usability evaluation.
\end{itemize}

\title{Interactive Maps of Mathematics}
\begin{document}
\maketitle
In the MathSearch Project\footnote{\url{http://mathsearch.kwarc.info} funded by the
Leibniz Foundation; 2012-2014} we are currently rethinking access to mathematical
knowledge and resources. In this Guided Research Project we want to build global map-based
navigation service for mathematics.
\begin{wrapfigure}r{7.3cm}\vspace*{-1em}
\includegraphics[width=7.3cm]{images/web2map}
\caption{Map of Online Communities, XKCD 2010 \protect\url{http://xkcd.com/802/}}
\label{fig:xkcd-web2map}
\end{wrapfigure}
The main idea is that humans are very skilled in spatial navigation and in particular have
learned to use map representation to navigate spaces and locate targets. Concretely, we
want to create a map of mathematics like the one in Figure~\ref{fig:xkcd-web2map}. We want
to base the map on ideas from Dave Rusin's Math
Atlas\footnote{\url{http://math-atlas.org}; created 1998, last updated 2001}, which uses
topics from the Math Subject Classification (\url{http://www.ams.org/msc/}) for map
regions and calculates the positioning and relative sizes from topic interconnections and
the numbers of publications.
The development of the map itself will be coordinated and iterated with the mathematical
community and hopefully supported by an artist. If successful, the map will become the
entry page to \url{http://mathweb.org} and an access method at
\url{http://planetmath.org}. The contribution of the GR thesis is to make the map
scalable, and interactive; linking it to various information sources like Zentralblatt
Math \url{http://www.zentralblatt-math.org} or the math genealogy project
\url{http://www.genealogy.math.ndsu.nodak.edu}. We envisage implementing the map (and its
interactions) in a mapping servers like OpenStreetMap \url{http://openstreetmap.org} or
Google Earth \url{http://www.google.de/earth/}, or even in immersive systems like
Minecraft \url{https://www.minecraft.net/}. Connections between areas could be implemented
as roads, highways or air/sea connections (possibly depending on their salience),
important theorems could be entered/visualized as landmarks.
There are few bounds to be creative here. The GR topic could also be worked on by two
closely collaborating students. We expect the GR thesis to come up with an initial system
that can be populated by the Math community.
